This week the Famous Player Logo series presents legendary, three time Ballon d’Or winner, Dutch footballer, Johan Cruyff.
Johan Cruyff is arguably the best football player to have existed, not just due to his amazing ball handling (cruyff turn), but because of his entire approach and vision towards the game. He embodied the perfect “Total Football” player. He was an outspoken young talent that understood how to revolutionize the game of football.

He was not just a total footballer, Cruyff also became a successful entrepreneur (especially due to his football fame). In 1979 while Cruyff was still playing for FC Barcelona, he thought to develop his own football boot, which ultimately became the Cruyff Sports brand. The C-boots (Cruyff boots) were immediately recognized by two of the best players in the world, Van Basten and Bergkamp.
Note: I personally think its a great mark. The craftsmanship, and the quality showcases Cruyff’s exceptional class. One could even describe him as the “Steve Jobs” of football.
Modern Cruyff classics sports brand:
In 2012 Cruyff Sports was relaunched with the help of SuperBruut AKA Thijs Janssen, a freelance graphic / visual designer based in Rotterdam, Netherlands. To showcase the history and keep it’s authenticity, the brand aimed even higher. We are not just looking at a simple sports brand, today the Cruyff umbrella hosts an institute, a foundation, a fashion brand, and even a library.
Superbruut Case Study: “…The new identity was designed to take the Cruyff brand upmarket and position it closer to larger, more fashionable brands. This was achieved by: 1) more focus on style and luxury and less about the brand heritage, and 2) designing a framework on to which secondary elements, colours and shapes could be attached. The result is a solid identity for the Cruyff brand with clear distinctions between the various sub-labels.”

Note: The logo system is appropriate for a high end sports brand. I don’t love the lion, because it reminds me of the Peugeot logo, but it does lock up nicely with the familiar Cruyff C-shape.
A few of my favorite Johan Cruyff quotes:
1) “If you can’t win, make sure you don’t lose.”
2) “It’s better to go down with your own vision than with someone else’s.”
3) “Football is simple but the hardest thing to do is play simple football.”
